The Ha Giang Loop is the most spectacular motorbike route in Vietnam. Located in the far north near the Chinese border, this journey takes you through dramatic limestone mountains, deep valleys, and remote ethnic villages.

When to ride · the season actually matters
The two windows that work are October to mid-December (clear, cool, golden rice-harvest light), and March to early May (warmer, hazier, fewer crowds). Avoid June to September — the monsoon turns the off-road sections into hike-a-bike, and Ma Pi Leng disappears into fog for days.
January and February are rideable but cold. Above 1,500 m on the Dong Van plateau, you will see frost. Bring real thermals, not the 'thermal' label on a t-shirt.
The bike question · 250cc dual-sport, not a scooter
Most rental shops in Ha Giang City will hand you a 110cc semi-automatic Honda. For the paved sections this is fine. For the real loop — the Khau Vai backroad, the river drop into Bao Lac, the broken tarmac on the way to Lung Cu — you want a Honda CRF250L or XR150L. Manual gearbox, real suspension, real brakes.
On our expeditions every rider is on a CRF250L Rally with knobbly tires, a tank bag, and a tool roll. The 4x4 support vehicle carries one spare bike. We do not improvise on this.
The route nobody runs · day five and six
Most operators ride the 'classic' four-day loop and stop. The real expedition continues east from Meo Vac — Khau Vai market road, single-track to Bao Lac, then Tinh Tuc and the old French tin-mining roads into Cao Bang. This adds two days and removes 90% of the other riders. It is also where the trip stops being a tour and becomes a memory.

Mistakes we see every season
Riders treat day one as a warm-up and arrive in Ha Giang City exhausted. The 300 km transfer from Hanoi is real riding, not a bus. We split it.
Riders pack for tropics. The Dong Van plateau is 1,500 m. It is cold, often wet, often both. Layer up.
Riders ride alone. Ha Giang has cliff drops with no barriers. Phone signal disappears in the karst. Solo crashes get found hours later. We ride with a sweep mechanic for a reason.
What we'd do if we had only seven days
Fly into Hanoi. Sleeper bus or private transfer to Ha Giang City. Three days on the classic loop (Quan Ba → Dong Van → Meo Vac). Two days on the eastern extension (Bao Lac → Cao Bang → Ban Gioc waterfall). Return to Hanoi via Ba Be Lake. That is the seven-day version of an expedition that deserves fourteen.
